Shopify Mobile Conversion Benchmarks by Industry
Mobile conversion rates on Shopify vary significantly by industry, from a 71 percent mobile-to-desktop gap in food and beverage to a 180 percent gap in furniture (Eevy AI, 2026), which means a single store-wide conversion benchmark tells a merchant far less than a category-specific one does.
Why category matters this much
The size of the mobile-to-desktop gap correlates closely with how considered the purchase decision is. Impulse or habitual purchases, food and beverage, supplements, close the gap fastest since there's less research and comparison happening before checkout. Considered purchases involving fit, measurement, or higher price points, jewelry, electronics, furniture, show the widest gaps, since that research and comparison behavior is exactly what mobile browsers handle worst.

Top Shopify categories by share of top stores: Fashion at roughly 30 percent, Beauty and Home each at roughly 15 percent, and Jewelry at roughly 12.5 percent (Eevy AI, 2026).
What the widest gaps have in common
Furniture, jewelry, and electronics sit at the top of the gap ranking, and all three share a pattern: higher average order values paired with purchases that involve real deliberation, measuring a room, checking a stone's specifications, comparing device specs across models. That deliberation is the exact behavior mobile browsers make hardest, small screens, easy tab-switching, slower research flows, which is why these categories show gaps of 129 to 180 percent rather than the 70 to 80 percent range seen in fashion, beauty, and food and beverage.
What the narrower gaps have in common
Food and beverage, beauty, and fashion cluster in the 71 to 82 percent range, categories where purchases tend to be faster decisions, either habitual (reordering a product used before) or lower-consideration relative to price point. These categories don't need customers to research as extensively before buying, which narrows the mobile disadvantage even though it doesn't eliminate it.
Baby and kids stands out differently: rather than a mobile-to-desktop split, the benchmark shows top-decile stores reaching 7.5 percent mobile conversion, well above every other category's mobile figure, which signals substantial upside for stores that get mobile right in this category specifically, driven by scheduled, repeat parent purchasing behavior.
How to use these benchmarks
A store's actual conversion numbers should be compared against its own category benchmark, not a generic ecommerce average, since a jewelry store converting at 1.5 percent mobile is meaningfully outperforming its category's 0.8 percent baseline, while a food and beverage store at the same 1.5 percent would be underperforming its 2.1 percent category benchmark. The gap size also signals how much a native app or PWA might realistically close: wider gaps suggest more room for a faster, less friction-heavy mobile experience to make a difference.
Getting a store-specific number
Category benchmarks are a starting point, not a substitute for a store's own data. Bonsify is a Shopify services company by FetchSky that builds native iOS and Android apps, PWAs, new Shopify stores, platform migrations, custom apps, and more, and the free audit reviews a store's actual mobile conversion data against its category benchmark to scope what's realistically achievable.

Furniture, at 180 percent, followed by jewelry at 138 percent and electronics at 129 percent (Eevy AI, 2026).
Food and beverage, at 71 percent, followed closely by beauty at 72 percent (Eevy AI, 2026).
Higher-AOV purchases usually involve more deliberation, comparison, and research, behavior that mobile browsers handle worse than desktop, which widens the conversion gap.
Rather than a mobile-to-desktop split, it shows top-decile mobile performance reaching 7.5 percent, signaling strong upside from scheduled, repeat parent purchasing behavior when mobile is done well.
The category benchmark, since a generic average obscures how much room for improvement actually exists for a specific category.
