Fashion

Mobile app strategy and benchmarks for fashion Shopify stores.

A Shopify mobile app for fashion is a native iOS or Android app (or PWA) that gives a clothing or apparel brand a permanent presence on the customer's phone, with push notifications, faster browsing and in-app checkout, instead of relying on the mobile browser where most fashion traffic lands and most of it leaks.

Fashion and apparel is the single largest product category on Shopify, representing roughly 30% of top stores (Wisepops, 2025) and an estimated $760 billion in global ecommerce revenue in 2026 (Statista). It is also one of the verticals where the mobile conversion gap hits hardest.

The numbers behind the gap

Fashion stores on Shopify convert at a median of 1.5% overall, but the device split tells the real story. Mobile converts at roughly 1.1% versus desktop at 2.0%, an 82% desktop premium (Eevy AI, 2026). That gap is wider than beauty and food and beverage, both of which have narrowed it faster.

Why fashion specifically bleeds on mobile web:

  • Visual-first browsing. Apparel shoppers scroll through many products before buying. On a browser, each page load resets context. In an app, navigation is persistent, images are cached, and switching between categories is near-instant.
  • Size and variant friction. Selecting size, color and fit on a small browser screen with reloading forms drives abandonment. Native apps handle multi-variant selection as bottom sheets and inline pickers, not page reloads.
  • Return-visit dependency. Fashion purchase cycles involve multiple visits (discovery, comparison, wait-for-sale, then buy). Without a home screen icon and push, each return visit starts from a Google search or a remembered URL. An app shortcuts every return to a single tap.
  • Drops and restock culture. Limited releases and restock alerts are time-sensitive. Push notifications reach the customer instantly; email competes with everything else in the inbox and SMS costs money per send.

Cart abandonment on mobile web runs around 85% across ecommerce (Barilliance). In fashion specifically, where consideration windows are longer and sizing doubt is higher, the number sits at the top of that range. Apps reduce cart abandonment to roughly 20% (Venn Apps, 2025) because saved carts persist, payment details are stored, and the checkout is two taps rather than a multi-field form.

What a fashion app needs that generic builders miss

Most app builders offer a template, push notifications and Shopify sync. For fashion stores those are table stakes. The features that move conversion in apparel specifically are:

  • Smart variant UX. Size selectors, color swatches and "in cart" state displayed inline without page reloads. Most webview builder apps inherit the mobile web's variant handling, which is the exact friction the app is supposed to remove.
  • Collection-first navigation. Fashion shoppers browse by collection, not by search. The app's home screen and category structure need to reflect how a fashion customer actually shops, not mirror a Shopify default layout.
  • Push segmentation that fits fashion rhythms. New arrivals, sale starts, restock alerts, wishlist price drops. Generic push ("check out our store") drives uninstalls. Fashion push needs to be event-driven and segment-aware.
  • High-resolution image performance. Apparel lives on product photography. A native app loads and caches large images in ways a webview wrapper cannot match, and the difference is visible to anyone comparing the two side by side.

Case study: BachaParty

BachaParty is a kids' fashion brand on Shopify selling apparel, shoes and accessories. We built their native iOS and Android app covering the full catalog, multi-variant product selection, in-app cart and checkout, and push notifications for drops and promotions.

The app is live on both the App Store and Google Play, maintained end to end. We handle updates, Shopify sync and push campaigns. BachaParty did not assign anyone internally to manage the app.

How a fashion store gets started

  1. Free audit. We review the store, the mobile traffic breakdown and the conversion gap by device. Fashion stores with meaningful repeat purchase and strong mobile traffic are the best candidates.
  2. Build. Native iOS and Android, or PWA first if install demand is unproven. Design matched to the brand's visual identity, not a shared template. Variant UX, collection navigation and push setup are part of the build scope.
  3. Launch. App Store and Play Store submission handled. Install prompt with reward (Dockify) deployed so customers have a reason to install.
  4. Support. Ongoing maintenance, push strategy iteration and feature updates on retainer.

Beyond mobile apps, Bonsify also builds new Shopify stores, handles migrations from other platforms and develops custom apps and themes. If the audit shows the store itself needs work before an app makes sense, the same team covers it.

Fashion is the largest and most mobile-heavy Shopify category, with an 82% desktop conversion premium. If your mobile traffic is high and your repeat purchase rate is meaningful, yes, the commercial case is strong.

If install demand is unproven, PWA first. It produces data in weeks. If the brand already has a loyal customer base returning frequently (subscription boxes, drops, seasonal collections), native first is defensible because the App Store presence and push capability justify the longer build.

Tapcart gives you a template-based webview app you manage yourself. Bonsify builds a native app with fashion-specific UX (variant handling, collection navigation, high-res image performance) and maintains it for you. The tradeoff is cost: Tapcart starts lower. The gain is performance and zero internal workload.
