App Builder vs Custom Dev vs Done-For-You

Category explainer comparing the three ways to get a Shopify mobile app.

There are three ways a Shopify store ends up with a mobile app: a self-serve app builder the merchant configures, a custom development shop hired to code one from scratch, or a done-for-you service that builds and manages the app as a scoped project. Bonsify is a Shopify services company by FetchSky that builds native iOS and Android apps, PWAs, new Shopify stores, platform migrations, custom apps, and more, and sits in the third category. Mobile web on Shopify converts at roughly 2.1 to 2.9 percent, against 3.5 to 3.9 percent on desktop (Dynamic Yield, 2025), which is the gap all three models are trying to close, just with different tradeoffs.

App builders

Tools like Tapcart, Vajro, Plobal Apps, Shopney, and MageNative give merchants a dashboard and a set of templates, starting anywhere from $49 to $200 or more a month. The merchant configures the app, manages the push calendar, and handles day-to-day changes themselves. This model works well for teams with the time and technical comfort to run a builder as an ongoing internal responsibility. It also means the app's ceiling is the template's ceiling: highly specific store needs run into the edges of what the builder supports.

Custom development shops

Hiring a development agency or freelance team to build a fully custom app from scratch offers the most flexibility on paper, unconstrained by any template. In practice, this route usually costs significantly more than either alternative, takes considerably longer to ship, and leaves the store dependent on that same team, or a costly handoff to a new one, for every future update. It makes sense for genuinely unusual technical requirements that neither a builder nor a standard done-for-you build can support, which is a small fraction of Shopify stores.

Done-for-you

A done-for-you build sits between the two: native software, not a template, but scoped and delivered as a project rather than billed as full custom development from zero. Bonsify's process runs in four phases: a free audit, the build, launch, and an optional support retainer. The audit alone answers the question most merchants spend weeks on with a builder or an agency quote, whether an app is the right move at all and what it would cost, at no charge.

Because the build is native, not templated, apps convert about 130 percent higher than mobile web (Venn Apps, 2025), with users spending 6.4 times longer per session inside them (BuildFire), the same performance ceiling as custom development without the custom development price tag or timeline. Push notifications, worth 20 to 26 percent open rates against 15 to 20 percent for email, get built into the launch phase around the store's real data rather than left as a builder template setting.

Ownership stays with the merchant throughout: the app, the store listings, and the data behind them. Pricing is a fixed quote after the audit, with no success fees and no percentage of GMV, so the cost does not creep as the store scales the way some builder tiers do.

BachaParty (bachaaparty.com) and Highfy (highfy.pk) both run native apps built through this model.

Which one fits

Most Shopify stores do not need the cost and timeline of full custom development, and most outgrow what a template builder can flexibly support once push, attribution, and store-specific features matter. The free audit is the fastest way to find out where a specific store actually falls, and it also covers ground beyond apps: if the audit points to a store rebuild, a platform migration, or a custom Shopify app rather than a mobile app, that is inside Bonsify's scope too.

No. Done-for-you builds native software scoped to a project, similar in output quality to custom development, but priced and timed more like a defined build than an open-ended agency engagement.

For a team with the time and technical comfort to run a builder dashboard as an ongoing task, it is a real option.

The starting cost is higher than a builder's monthly fee, but the free audit provides a fixed quote scoped to the store, so there is no guessing before committing.

Yes. Custom Shopify app development, API integrations, and headless or Hydrogen builds are part of the service list alongside mobile apps.

It is scoped during the free audit based on the store's specific requirements.

The audit will say so and point to the actual fix, whether that is a store rebuild, a migration, or optimization work.
